Community

The community of San Miguel del Bala is located in the Madidi National Park and its members are from the Tacana culture, an ethnic group that, since pre-Columbian times, had as habitat the extensive Amazon forest of the Madidi.
Throughout its history the Tacana culture has resisted the incursions of the Inca empire by taking refuge in the exotic jungle and that during the colony they knew how to adapt to the circumstances creating mechanisms of commercial exchange, they warned that the restrictions on hunting and fishing, in addition to Continuous forestry incursions in the area became a threat to their existence if they did not adapt to a world of change.

At present, the 35 families that are part of San Miguel – with just under 250 inhabitants took advantage of the benefits of the forest to embrace the San Miguel del Bala ecotourism project that has become one of the pioneer companies in community tourism of which the The entire population of San Miguel not only on the property, but also spreading the cultural heritage, preserving the environment, generating jobs and benefiting from the income of the tourist activity.
In addition to working in tourism, community members are mainly engaged in fishing, controlled hunting, agriculture, natural medicines and handicrafts. The eco-shelter has been the best response to preserve and consolidate the protected area of ​​the Madidi National Park.
The community of San Miguel del Bala is 45 minutes by boat from the city of Rurrenabaque to where it is possible to get on a land trip of just over 10 hours from the city of La Paz, or by air in just under 40 minutes.
